Floodplain Management Program

Where it rains, it can flood—and that includes Mesa County. Flooding occurs when water overflows onto normally dry land. It is the most common natural hazard in Colorado and can occur even in dry, high-desert regions like much of the Western Slope.

In Mesa County, floods are commonly caused by:

  • Heavy rainfall 
  • Rapid snowmelt

Mesa County’s Floodplain Management Program works to improve flood safety and raise awareness about flood protection strategies, such as mitigation and insurance. 

We offer:

  • Property-specific flood risk information
  • Site visits to assess drainage and flooding issues 
  • Flood protection and grant application advice
