A Mesa County program is creating better outcomes for both shelter dogs and local students.

Mindful Mutts brings together Mesa County Animal Services, School District 51 and community volunteers. Students work directly with shelter dogs to build basic skills, improve socialization and prepare them for adoption.

The goal is to have students train and work with dogs in a structured, supportive environment. In the process, both gain confidence.

What the program does

Students in District 51’s career and technical programs learn how to:

  • Train basic behaviors
  • Build trust through positive reinforcement
  • Support dogs that struggle in new or unfamiliar environments

The program uses force-free methods focused on building confidence and consistency.

For dogs:

  • Better socialization increases adoption potential
  • Training helps dogs transition into homes
  • Confidence reduces stress in the shelter

For students:

  • Hands-on experience builds real-world skills
  • Exposure to careers in animal care
  • Opportunities to develop patience, responsibility and communication

A win for the community

Programs like Mindful Mutts show how local partnerships can solve real challenges.

Dogs are better prepared for adoption. Students gain practical skills and confidence. The result is a stronger, more connected community
