How to identify the dalmatian toadflax noxious weed
This National Invasive Species Awareness Week, we are highlighting noxious weeds that can be found in our area to bring awareness and education to our community. When residents have the proper knowledge, they can report the noxious weed to Mesa County so we can treat it before it causes a larger problem. The dalmatian toadflax is a noxious weed established in high-elevation areas near Mesa and Molina with the ability to aggressively invade pastures, forests, and disturbed sites by forming monocultures that degrade grazing lands for cattle and wildlife. Its known distribution is limited and eradication is possible.
Identification features of the dalmatian toadflax:
- Heart-shaped waxy leaves
- Bright yellow flowers similar in appearance to snap-dragons
- Flowers April through October
- Perennial
To prevent this noxious weed from harming our environment, we can suppress populations and eradicate it through multiple herbicide treatments and biological controls.
