Food Safety Alert: Cucumbers recalled due to Salmonella concerns

Mesa County Public Health (MCPH) has been made aware of a recall from Bedner Growers involving cucumbers. The products are being recalled due to a potential contamination of Salmonella. The products distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales to retailers, distribution centers, wholesalers and food service distributors between April 29 and May 19. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, there have been 26 illnesses linked to the recalled cucumbers across multiple states, including Colorado.
Description of recalled products
- Cucumbers may have been sold individually or in smaller packages.
- The products may not have any labeling with a brand name or best by date.
- For distributors, restaurants, and retailers who purchased these cucumbers, the products were labeled as either being “supers,” “selects,” or “plains”.
- Additional recalls are being conducted by companies that used or repackaged the recalled cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers:
- Fresh cucumbers and vegetable trays from Harris Teeter
- Yummi sushi-branded products from Kroger
What consumers should do
- Consumers should check their refrigerators for the recalled products and throw them out.
- Visit the FDA website for more information.
- Contact a doctor if you have concerns after eating the recalled products.

Salmonella description
- Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
- Symptoms usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection and can last 4 to 7 days.
- Most people recover without treatment.
- Salmonella can lead to serious and sometimes deadly infections for young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
