Mesa County joined community members, state partners and the construction team this month to celebrate the completion of the US 6 Clifton Improvements Project — a long-planned investment focused on safety, access and smoother traffic flow through the heart of Clifton.

For Mesa County, the project reflects years of listening to residents, working alongside CDOT and advocating for improvements that meet the everyday needs of the Clifton community. The corridor between First and Fifth streets is now designed to move traffic more efficiently while creating safer conditions for people driving, walking, or biking through the area.

“This project represents more than just pavement and roundabouts,” said Mesa County Commissioner JJ Fletcher, who represents District 3. “It reflects years of working hand in hand to identify needs, plan improvements and invest in infrastructure that makes our community safer and more accessible.”

The improvements include modern roundabouts at each end of the corridor, upgraded pedestrian connections and design changes that slow traffic and reduce conflict points. Together, these upgrades are intended to improve traffic flow while lowering the risk of serious crashes — especially at busy intersections.

Mesa County also completed adjacent roadway improvements on 32 1/2 Road to help maintain access during construction and improve connectivity for local drivers. That work helped reduce disruptions for residents and businesses while the project was underway and continues to support travel options today.

While the project required patience during construction, county leaders emphasized the long-term benefits for the community. The improved corridor supports local businesses, enhances access to nearby neighborhoods and creates a safer, more welcoming gateway into Clifton.

“With the completion of this project, what was once a busy and sometimes congested corridor has been transformed,” Fletcher said. “These improvements will serve Clifton for decades to come.
