Recycling is a positive action that everyone can take to support our community, the economy, and the environment, although recycling may not always be the right answer. Knowing what items can be recycled at the Mesa County Landfill is the first step in responsible recycling, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy, and prevent unnecessary items from filling landfills.

Can these items be recycled at the Mesa County Landfill?

Yes

  • Brown paper bags
  • Paper towel/toilet paper rolls
  • Cereal/food boxes
  • Paperboard egg cartons
  • Shoe boxes
  • Junk mail
  • Phone books
  • Rigid plastic food containers #1 - #7
  • Glass food containers

No

  • Refrigerated/frozen food containers
  • Food/grease-stained materials
  • Wet materials
  • Styrofoam egg cartons
  • Plastic wrap/plastic bags
  • Plastic toys, totes, or other household items
  • Dinnerware - plastic or metal
  • Wax paper
  • Food/grease-stained materials

Even with the best intentions, putting items in the recycling bin that can’t be recycled has many consequences. Unrecyclable items can contaminate recyclable items near them, cause costly damage to equipment and require staff to take extra time to sort these items and send them to the correct place.

We appreciate you taking the extra moment next time you are standing next to a trash can and recycling bin to determine if your item is recyclable, helping to create a healthier planet for ourselves and future generations and supporting our local waste management specialists.
