Septic Systems

SepticSmart Week

September 16-20, 2019

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated the week of September 16-20, 2019 as SepticSmart Week.

Stop by all week for quick tips on keeping your septic system healthy.

As homeowners with septic systems know, proper care and maintenance of a septic system can reuce costly repairs and extend the life of the system.

Reminding family members and guests about what not to flush down the toilet or put down a sink drain is vital to the health of the system.

Harsh chemicals, grease, coffee grounds, medications, diapers and sanitary wipes should never be flushed down the drain.

Visit the U.S. EPA's website for more information about maintaining a healthy septic syste.

Mission

Mesa County Engineering administers the Mesa County OWTS (On-site Wastewater Treatment System) Regulations promulgated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The goal is to ensure proper onsite wastewater disposal in areas which are not served by municipal sewer.  This Department issues all OWTS/septic permits, septic clearances and reviews land use applications where an OWTS is proposed.  All OWTS installers and pumpers/cleaners must be licensed by this Department to install, pump and haul wastewater to a treatment facility.  The staff also responds to complaints relating to the violation of any part of these Regulations.
