The Gunnison River Bluff Areas

Many important trail systems traverse western Colorado. Two of these trails are located just south of Grand Junction in an area known as the Gunnison Bluffs. The Gunnison Bluffs is located along the Gunnison River between Intermountain Veteran's Memorial Park and Whitewater. Within this area, the Gunnison River Bluffs Trail and the Old Spanish Trail provide opportunities to enjoy scenic views and reflect on some western history. Small unmarked paths connect the two main trails at several locations allowing travel from the lush riparian habitat along the Gunnison River to the dry desert route of the historic Old Spanish Trail.

The Gunnison River Bluffs Area is open to hiking, biking and horseback riding through the cooperation of Mesa County, the City of Grand Junction, Bureau of Land Management, the Grand Junction/Mesa County Riverfront Commission, Orchard Mesa Irrigation District, the Museum of Western Colorado, the Old Spanish Trail Association, private landowners in the area and numerous sponsors who have donated work and materials. Some sections of the Gunnison River Bluffs Area are on private property.

Please treat these areas with respect and care. Thank you for helping us to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy our beautiful environment. The Gunnison River Bluffs Area is managed as a non-motorized vehicle use area.
