During the March 26 administrative public hearing, the Board of County Commissioners approved amendments to Mesa County’s 2024 budget and staffing levels to authorize additional revenues, expenditures, and department needs with updated information that was not available at the time of the 2024 budget adoption on Dec. 12, 2023.

The adjustments carry forward funds from 2023, acknowledge new revenue sources—such as grant funding—and authorize appropriations not previously anticipated. The revised budget now stands, adding total revenue of $1,032,521, mainly grant funding, with total expenditures reaching $27,192,172, including purchase orders (POs) amounting to $22,540,392 that are a rollover from 2023.

The staffing-level adjustments align with Mesa County’s evolving workforce needs to better serve residents.

  • Behavioral Health’s $390,011 increase is for five grant-funded full-time employees (FTEs) to support expanding programs and community needs, financed through federal and state grants.
  • Community Development benefits from an additional FTE, with $85,527 allocated for a Plans Examiner Manager to efficiently manage the increased workload.
  • Noxious Weed and Pest will receive partial funding (0.2 FTE ) to support a position funded mainly by grant money.

The amended budget also highlights new revenue streams, including opioid settlement funding and Great Outdoors Colorado funding, earmarked for community support projects such as the Loma Playground and the District Attorney’s Office Lighthouse program.
