Sheriff Todd Rowell
Sheriff Todd Rowell was sworn into office in August 2021 after serving as the Undersheriff for the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. He is a native of Colorado, raised in a small coal-mining town on the Western Slope. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. During his four years in the military, Sheriff Rowell received numerous awards, including Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year and the Navy Achievement Medal.
Following his enlistment in the military, Sheriff Rowell attended both the Corrections Academy and the Police Academy at Delta-Montrose Technical College. He graduated at the top of his class at the Police Academy in 2000 and was hired by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office the same year.
While working as a Sergeant in The Professional Standards Unit, Sheriff Rowell continued his education at Colorado Mesa University. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration. He graduated from County Sheriffs of Colorado’s Command Staff Institute and Northwestern University’s Supervision of Police Personnel program.
During his 20-plus years with the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Rowell has served in various leadership positions and received several awards, including two Life Saving Medals. He also served six years as the President of the Mesa County Deputy Sheriff’s Association.
Along with his wife and two kids, they are proud to call Mesa County their home.
Undersheriff Matt King
Undersheriff Matt King is a Colorado native who grew up in northwestern Colorado. After high school, he worked in the mining and construction industry before moving to Alaska, where he began his law enforcement career with the State of Alaska Department of Corrections. Undersheriff King attended the Alaska Police Training Council Correctional Academy, then returned to Mesa County in 2003, where he joined the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Undersheriff King served in the Detentions Division before attending the Western Colorado Peace Officers Academy in 2007. During his 18 years with the Sheriff’s Office, Undersheriff King has served as an Operations Deputy, Rural Area Deputy, Operations Sergeant, and Property Crimes Investigation Sergeant before promoting to Lieutenant. Undersheriff King is a graduate of the National Command and Staff College.
During his tenure with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, he has received several awards, including the Medal of Merit and Excellence Awards.
Undersheriff King and his wife feel blessed to be a part of the Mesa County community and call it their home.
